Cheerleading

Cheerleading at Springwood Central is offered to all students (boys and girls).   Senior students attend tryouts at the beginning of the year and, if successful, will be offered a place in our cheerleading team (Scorpions – Years 4, 5 and 5 students).  Students who are offered a place in the team must be prepared to commit to the team for the entire year.  The team will compete in several competitions (outside of school time) during the year.  There is a cost involved in this elective.

The senior team will attend training each Friday at school where they will learn cheerleading skills from accredited coaches.  Senior students will also work on developing their flexibility through stretching and yoga-style activities, their ability in dancing (e.g. rhythm, co-ordination, performance presentation) and their knowledge of choreography (e.g. performing others' choreography and creating their own choreography).

When participating in the cheer team, our students learn not only the physical skills of cheerleading, but also other valuable skills such as:

  • Trust – flyers have to trust their bases to catch them and bases have to trust their flyers to execute their skills correctly.  If there is no trust in each other, the stunts do not work;
  • Mental toughness – cheerleading is 80% mental and 20% physical.  Learning cheer routines can be tough and our students develop a great attitude and work ethic;
  • Friendship – cheerleaders develop trusting friendships through training and performing together as part of a team;
  • Teamwork – cheerleading teaches students to work as a focused team.  It helps them to handle both disappointments and success as a team.  Cheerleaders work just as hard as other sporting teams (and they look good while doing it!);
  • A strong work ethic – cheerleading teaches kids to approach life with a positive attitude and a determination to do things to the best of their ability.  Commitment by all members of the team is necessary for success in cheerleading;
  • Communication – all team members need to be able to communicate effectively to each other to execute stunts correctly (and safely).
